** Valkyrja has largely existed in a vacuum of uncool. The Swedes’ brand of fiery black is likened to Watain fucking around with early period Enslaved, but that’s the extent of Valkyrja’s Satan-powered volcano. Throughout the group’s three-album discography they tap an unknown darkness. They make you feel as if you’ve stuck your head and heart into the abyss. Valkyrja’s latest album, The Antagonist’s Fire, is a genuine and personal journey into inner recesses of evil, where existentialism and nihilism meet in a grimy, blood-and-dreams soaked pit.

Because every day another band records another song.  Because 83% of those songs are unlistenable and you can’t be bothered to sift through the dreck.  Because metal is about not giving a shit and waking your own personal storm.  Because music is universal, expression is boundless, and even indie labels (whatever that means these days) don’t know everything, Decibel brings you Throw Me a Frickin’ Label Hack. Like most people, when I think of France, I think of burly, hairy doom metal.  If you are not like most people, however, you may be surprised by the rumbly midpaced thunder…

  • Why we need Rise Against now more than ever

    Raz
    20 Aug 2014 | 9:15 am
Rise Against have achieved both commercial and critical success. The former is the result of a well-formed career but to be as widely appreciated by the music press, a band needs to have some substance to their style and with the word ‘punk’ so easily used as a stick to beat some in the genre, David Keevill explains why Rise Against are flying the flag the highest at the moment. Over the last few weeks, pictures and videos of the devastating air attacks in Gaza have filled social media. Accompanying the outpouring of grief and sympathy for those unwitting civilians caught in the…

If you’ve seen a worse album cover this year then please let me know. A mountain of skateboards, a garish shade of green and a font that could’ve been lifted from a Goosebumps novel; it’s pretty much exactly what your parents picture when they think of punk. But as bad as it may be, it’s a fitting representation of the Gnarwolves circus, which has probably rolled into your town at some…

Pallbearer Foundations of Burden Profound Lore 25 August 2014 by Cheryl Carter The rise of Pallbearer has been interesting to witness – from their humble beginnings and the demo of 2010, to the much anticipated debut record (Sorrow & Extinction) to the follow up that they are now on the cusp of releasing – the Arkansas-based doom band have followed a steady path of ever-increasing popularity without losing sight of what’s actually important – the music. 2012s Sorrow & Extinction was quite rightly hailed as one of the best records of the year. That record was a call to arms,…

In past tournaments we have given arguments for both sides, yet what we kept hearing again and again was if the reader didn’t know the musician they had to vote based completely on our opinion and arguments. I hope with the new format we can use the wonders of YouTube to let you see and feel who you think is the musician that deserves to go to the next round. We are presenting you with three qualities essential for an elite drummer. The show stopping solo, their public relations skills and how they relate to fans, and my personal favorite, drum cam footage so you can watch their technique…
  • WLM Reviews Godsmack-1000 HP

    The Shepherd
    21 Aug 2014 | 12:00 pm
Have you ever met someone and their charisma and power struck you into amazement? Instantly, you were attracted, couldn’t wait to dig deeper and learn more because their pull was an indomitable force. The more you learned, the more you liked, and it seemed unfathomable that their blinding light could possibly dim. Godsmack took the metal world by storm with their self-titled album back in 1998. Like a flash they were in support roles for major acts out on the road, releasing videos and singles, fans flocked to them, mesmerized by songs like Bad Religion, Voodoo, and Immune. With a single…

  • Converge @ Classic Grand, Glasgow – 5/8/14

    Matt MacLennan
    22 Aug 2014 | 1:00 pm
Having never sat down and reviewed a gig before, I had every intention of staying sober to make sure I could remember every single nuance of my first experience seeing Converge live. I failed. By the time the support acts had wound up I was well on my way to having that warm, fuzzy feeling of inebriation rise up past the hairs on my neck. Combined with the fact that my nerves were already shot from sitting for hours having a sensitive part of my body tattooed (My hand. You perverts!) and by the time the Boston legends took the stage, I’d begun to feel somewhat euphoric. What followed…

  • Obituary Release Trailer for New Album, ‘Inked In Blood’

    Aaron Lambert
    22 Aug 2014 | 11:00 am
It’s nice to see that the forefathers of death metal are keeping up so well with the legions of young bands they themselves have influenced. Between last year’s Surgical Steel from Carcass and Colored Sands from Gorguts, the old school guys have proved that they are still just as relevant today as they were 20 years ago, and we can yet another band to this list of revived monarchs: Obituary. The legendary death metal outfit is set to release their eighth studio album, entitled Inked In Blood, on Oct. 28 through Relapse Records, and for those clamoring to hear some new…
  • Torche Announce US Tour, New Album In the Works

    22 Aug 2014 | 10:00 am
Steve Brooks has had quite a year. It’s only been a few months since a reunited Floor released a very solid comeback album of poppy sludge, along with the expected touring and press cycles that come with it. Lest his other projects begin to feel neglected though, it appears Torche is back in full swing as well. The band had already announced a smattering of Australian tour dates for October, but via the band’s Facebook page yesterday they also announced a string of US dates for late September. Check out the dates for both tours after the jump. Torche Fall 2014 Tour: Sep 18:…

Rosetta are one of our favorite post-metal ensembles. In spite of the fact that they are a well established act, they managed to blow our minds with their last release, The Anaesthete. Blending the emotional approach of post-metal with an unyielding dedication to being heavy, Rosetta have a sound that is both melancholy and pissed off. Today, they released a teaser video for their upcoming EP, including a sneak peak at the artwork. Check it out after the jump! The first thing that’s obvious right from the first few seconds of music is that this is going to be heavy. The bass and…

  • How Girls and Gremlins Inspired This Fan Favorite Song

    DanielTaylorMitchell
    12 Aug 2014 | 10:05 am
While many Autumns Eyes songs are created from an organic process inspired by instinct, there are a few tracks which have a story to tell behind their origin. Parallel Absolution is a favorite amongst fans, but it’s inception is rooted in a unique story. The year was somewhere around 2005 shortly after the release of...
