    14 May 2012 | 8:30 am
You stepped up with more songs on Torture than on previous albums. Why is that? Rob Barrett: The original plan was that each of us to write four or five songs, but we decided to stop writing several weeks before going into the studio to concentrate on the 12 songs that were already written. I was starting up on a 4th song, but it seemed best not to rush anything since we already had enough material for the album. I’m writing more now because it provides more variety and diversity on the overall sound of the album if the three of us are writing more evenly. Which of the songs that you…

  • BILOCATE - Summoning The Bygones

    15 May 2012 | 2:45 pm
The music on this album is a really strange one, coming from a country with a strong tradition in music, but not so famous for it's Metal scene in general. Bilocate are from Jordan, and what makes this album stand out of the ordinary is their ability to combine oriental influences and bits into their own style. The music is really hard to tag, imagine a hybrid of Melodic Death Metal, with enough Progressive elements, tons of very mind intriguing melodies, and a combination of clear and brutal vocals. First of all, what is dominating the music are the oriental melodies, which are audible…

    9 May 2012 | 1:49 pm
Third album of the Swedish Death Metal band that exists since 2006, and once again, an album that will leave all fans drooling. First of all the band is playing Death Metal, but not exactly the kind of Melodic Swedish Death Metal. Instead, their sound is much more technical, with a lot of changes, not so many melodies in each song, and much more harsh and brutal vocals. Their music is complex and needs some time to get into it, although you will find yourself amazed by the energy and groove of the songs. The vocals are very interesting, dwelling between Death and Black, but also using various…

    6 May 2012 | 2:59 pm
Third album for the Swedish Hard Rock act, and I am pretty sure that this one will establish their brandname to a much wider audience. To all those unfamiliar with the sound of the band, let me tell you that these guys love the 80's, and the Glam/Hard Rock style and attitude of this era. This is very good, and works very well here, since the band has the talent to create songs that manage to capture the spirit and the feeling of this genre, without sound like another superstar clone, or creating music that has nothing to say. First of all is the skill, in the creation and in the performance.

Earlier this year, I read Metalion: The Slayer Mag Diaries by Jon Kristiansen. The book is a solid testament to the Second Wave of Black Metal in Norway during the late ’80s and early ’90s, but while the zines themselves are incredibly evocative of a reality that may no longer exist in metal, the written chapters in between the photocopied pages are the book’s most valuable assets. These are the confessions of a player in what is now a cultural myth, expressing the disillusionment and intensity (and sure, the drunkenness and poverty) that helped gestate something that many of us…

Fifteen years after forming as a band, Romania’s Negură Bunget played their first US show at Cameo in Brooklyn on Friday, 4/20. They barely made it. They came straight from the airport, and the opening band, Din Brad (comprised of NB members Negru, Gadinet, Inia Dinia, and outside vocalist Alma), had to cancel their performance when the whole Negură Bunget crew ran into visa trouble at customs. Thankfully our diligent border police let them through—Negură Bunget delivered an incredible performance. Haethen, a black metal band from New Jersey, opened the show. They’re pretty obscure,…

Normally they stick to the editorial side of things in their Philly headquarters, but this past April Decibel Magazine set out on their maiden tour voyage, bringing Behemoth, Watain, The Devil’s Blood and In Solitude to your state (or Canadian province). Featuring all European artists, this was a bold line-up arrangement on the magazine’s part, especially because this was Behemoth’s first U.S. tour since vocalist/guitarist Adam “Nergal” Darski’s well-documented battle with and triumph over leukemia. With one minor set-back – the start date in Columbus, Ohio had to move…

In metal we cherish our history. It’s a shared bond that unites all of us across decades and continents and keeps our community strong. Pop music might be disposable but classic metal albums are timeless. Tradition still matters. There are few albums as timeless in the metal canon as Bathory’s Under The Sign Of The Black Mark, which turns 25 today. Some of today’s most influential black metal bands – particularly Watain – were enormously influenced by this album and its otherworldly take on the early black metal sound. Invisible Oranges has collaborated with our friends at Bazillion…

    15 May 2012 | 6:08 pm
Melancholia, controversial director Lars Von Trier’s latest film is a stunning piece of artwork that explores the nature of depression and humankind’s lonely and insignificant place in the universe. In short, it is a masterpiece. Philosophically, Melancholia can be seen as the nihilist twin of Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life, which debuted alongside Von Trier’s film at last year’s Cannes Festival. In fact, these were my two favorite films of 2011; both snubbed at the 84th Academy Awards. The film opens up with an unexplained 8-minute long, dialogue free, slow-motion exposition of…

Breaching Vista is the definition of “I make music to get on the radio” however, the band has very catchy material; they write extremely well and are without a doubt talented artists. Not that there’s anything wrong with that generic “radio play” mainstream music but it certainly isn’t what I’m looking for in a musician or band I can support and listen to on a regular basis.  As I’ve discussed with musicians, in my articles and amongst persons within the music industry, everyone with a laptop and an Internet connection thinks they’re a…

Aptly titled Tin Shed Tales, the shows were a rare opportunity to hear the music of this iconic artist, solo and in a raw and intimate setting. Designed and dressed personally by John, his Tin Shed was recreated; decked out with a collection of personal art pieces and old skool skateboards with his vintage guitars hanging from the corrugated shed walls. • Review: WIS(H)KEY

    Surdus
    16 May 2012 | 2:00 am
If you were to ask me which two genres of music are furthest apart I would probably select heavy metal and country (or classical and rap). Either way, these pairings would sit at opposite ends of the spectrum in my mind. WIS(H)KEY do their best to stomp all over that notion of separation, mixing together country and metal like sulphur and charcoal – with explosive results. Now, to be honest, when I started this journey into back country hard core, it didn’t feel natural. The first couple of songs on WIS(H)KEY’s self-titled album didn’t sit right, they came across as heavy…

This week I want to look at those songs that you just love, but you really don’t want to admit it to anyone. Although heavy on the cheese and light on the meaning you know you have to smile when the first chord hits and your head starts that small bob. After checking out my list let me know if I missed any big ones. When I was looking at songs I realized this could easily be a Top 100 list: 10 – “Here I Go Again” Whitesnake – what can you say. This became one of the anthems of the 80s and although massively successful certainly makes me laugh a bit at the deep emotion Coverdale…

Being a musician requires a lot of things. It takes courage, it takes talent and, let’s face it, getting up on stage in front of crowds and pouring out your heart takes balls. And there’s another requirement for people wanting to make it in the music business: tenacity. What impressed me most about Machinery was their tenacity. Dan Burzynski and his fellow musicians have been rocking, on and off, for over twenty years and their sound is still just as fresh as when they started. Machinery has a new album coming out this June and, to give us a taste of what we can expect next month,…
