Earlier this month, I re-introduced you to Graham Williams, the man essentially responsible for procuring the across-the-board talent for FunFunFunFest, the annual party that’s taken place in Austin each year of the past eight. Not only is Williams a prolific promoter/booker with a seemingly inexhaustible knowledge of what the hell is going on in every scene from extreme music and indie rock to hip-hop and stand-up comedy, the guy is probably the best sport of anyone who’s ever sauntered across the face of the earth. This, because as part of my interview with him this time around…

Last week’s Sunday Spotify Slaylist got us thinking – horror films and heavy metal have a long and established history together, and while Judgment Night is definitely an interesting soundtrack to look at for its historical significance in pairing modern rap and rock together pre-nu metal, it definitely wasn’t a horror film. With this being the last Sunday before Halloween proper, we figured we needed to address this by looking at the soundtrack to something unashamedly Halloween-ish. Anaal Nathrakh Desideratum Metal Blade 27 October 2014 by Rob McAuslan How, if you’re Anaal Nathrakh, do you develop your sound even further into the realms of the ridiculously extreme? It’d be fair to say that in their pretty rarefied stratum, Nathrakh are already top dog – black-grind-industrial-death metal isn’t the largest of fields to be playing in, after all – but not content with this status, these Midlands misanthropes attempt to push harder and harder with each release. After 32 women entered the fray we have gotten to the point where we begin to name The Metal Queen.  Much like our past tournaments we will give you three videos displaying the talents of these Metal Giants.  This isn’t a beauty contest, this is a chance to name the heaviest of metal females. Look at the stuck up hipster!  Those hipsters are ruining metal!  Those elitist pieces of shit hipsters should move on to their next obnoxious thing! At any live show (especially Black Metal) you are going to hear things like the ones above, as we the long term metal fan are invaded by the bearded flannel wonders known as “hipsters.”  In case you don’t know where I’m going with this: if you say the above, you’re one of the stupid people that say stupid shit. If you look up the definition of “hipster” you will see something along the lines of:…
  • Brutality & Beauty Are Featured In Downfall Of Gaia

    30 Oct 2014 | 12:00 am
Downfall of Gaia is here in the featured band spot for a complex, yet simple reason. As I poured over the new album “Aeon Unveils the Thrones of Decay” I was taken on a journey so brutal I at times had to look away… but at the same time the beautiful and atmospheric moments were so overwhelming I could not. Experiencing an emotional connection is a rare treat that can be thought provoking and emotionally jubilant. Downfall Of Gaia will give you this. Amazing moments of beauty, harmful moments of brutality, and a longing for continuation when it ends. That’s the reason.

When the assertion is made that an artist’s newest effort demonstrates homage to their roots, it is typically met with at least a small shred of doubt, especially when the claim is aimed towards a more veteran act. This is due to the tantalizing concept of revisiting the “golden years” often having a difficult time fitting through the mold of the actual band in their current state. Godflesh’s reunion album A World Lit Only by Fire, the band’s first in over a decade, would seem to be a perfect example of this theory. For even forgetting the fact that Justin K. Broadrick’s work with…

Autumn’s Eyes was just the band we needed to add some variety to our hunt for the best unsigned band in the US. Slayer axeman Kerry King recently said that he could see the thrash pioneers hit their 35th anniversary, and also has no reason to believe that they can’t hit their 40th as well. King recently spoke from the studio where the band are currently working on their 11th studio album: “There’s no formula, man. When you think about it, how many people get to do this for 10 years? There are so many who don’t. We’re lucky enough to be one of the 30-year groups – there’s not many of those at all. “We’re still rockin’. I know 35’s within reach, then we’ll see about 40.

After Anthrax parted ways with singer Dan Nelson back in 2009, and before they Joey Belladonna returned to the fold, Taylor was invited for an acoustic jam with guitarists Scott Ian and Frank Bello, followed by a dinner meeting. Taylor spoke to Talk Is Jericho saying: “They were like, ‘We don’t know what to do.’ Someone – I don’t remember who – jokingly said, ‘Why don’t you sing for us?’ We all laughed. Nothing dramatic, no drag down fights, just time to move on. “As I have said previously, DevilDriver is on hiatus while I rejoin Coal Chamber for a new record…
