BURZUM has been described as “music to make mortals dream,” and  The Ways of Yore (Candlelight) will do just that, because it’ll put you to sleep. I guess living in France can’t be that cheap; it seems like Varg cranks records out once a year or so. I’m not going to delve into his politics, the fact that he’s a murderer or anything like that. This release is not black metal at all — not that anyone really expected that.  Clocking in at a little over an hour, this is a fully realized dark ambient piece. It may seem like I like this; I don’t.  This comes across like that…

By now Decibel readers have come to know and love the young upstarts in Noisem. They turned heads during the last Decibel tour (and almost got Jeff Walker of Carcass in a lot of trouble — check out the details in the instant oral history). So Decibel and our friends at A389 Recordings are excited to premiere the main track off the new Noisem seven-inch. Here’s what’s cool about this: RSR Records (Europe) and Amputated Vein Records (Japan) are part of this release. There are three versions of the 7″ — all limited to 500 copies. Because every day another band records another song.  Because 83% of those songs are unlistenable and you can’t be bothered to sift through the dreck.  Because metal is about not giving a shit and waking your own personal storm.  Because music is universal, expression is boundless, and even indie labels (whatever that means these days) don’t know everything, Decibel brings you Throw Me a Frickin’ Label Hack. As both a loyal proponent of atavistic black metal and a man with familial roots in southern Italy, I have searched for years for great Italian extreme music.  It has often…

The sandwich is possibly the greatest food-based invention. We need to be able to eat and post on Facebook at the same time. Sandwiches allow us to do this. The best thing about sandwiches, however, is that anybody can eat them. Vegetarian? Put some more salad in. Belly doesn’t like wheat? Use some gluten-free bread then! And everybody has a favourite sandwich. Even bands… Issues just played Reading & Leeds Festivals to a lot of people but a long, long time ago, we asked them the ultimate question: What is your favourite sandwich? Clearly, Tyler Carter and Michael Bohn eat a lot of…

The One Hundred Subculture UNFD 01 September 2014 by Thea de Gallier Ever wondered what would happen if you chucked Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Bury Tomorrow and Aphex Twin into a blender and recorded the sound that came out? The One Hundred have been together since late 2012, but with them only just preparing to drop their debut EP Subculture now, in mid 2014, you could assume that they’ve been away working on something spectacular. The big question, then: was it worth the wait? The answer is best summed up with a “hmm” and accompanying uncertain hand gesture. It’s interesting and…

Mortals Cursed To See The Future Relapse Records 07 July 2014 by Rob McAuslan Relapse are on a bit of a tear of late, signing all manner of bands both old and new; from death metal legends like Obituary to North Carolina’s grind neophytes Columns, they’ve got new records in the works from most areas of extreme metal. It’s at least encouraging to see this kind of faith being shown in a time when the industry as a whole is apparently eating beans on toast five nights out of seven. Scooping up Mortals as a part of this recent drive may well be one of the smarter moves they’ve made.
  • Why we need Rise Against now more than ever

    20 Aug 2014 | 9:15 am
Rise Against have achieved both commercial and critical success. The former is the result of a well-formed career but to be as widely appreciated by the music press, a band needs to have some substance to their style and with the word ‘punk’ so easily used as a stick to beat some in the genre, David Keevill explains why Rise Against are flying the flag the highest at the moment. Over the last few weeks, pictures and videos of the devastating air attacks in Gaza have filled social media. Accompanying the outpouring of grief and sympathy for those unwitting civilians caught in the…

Back in 2011 Opeth released a record entitled Heritage that demonstrated that people get really weird about music, and particularly about reviews of bands they love. The voluminous comment thread on my review of the record is a testament to the fact that Heritage was well-loved by some: and that group had OPINIONS. The discussion was remarkable for being quite ad hominem, irrational and genuinely lame. People who obviously never read the review looked at the score (a 2/5) and decided that I was a “butthurt” death metal guy who can’t handle change. The general…

  • WLM Reviews Ace Frehley- Space Invader

    The Shepherd
    1 Sep 2014 | 12:00 am
We were on the third hole, behind Alpine Valley Music Theatre, when I damned near tipped the golf cart over. My wife screamed at me, wondering where the hell my mind was. Kiss had played on the very stage we were 100 yards behind the night before, and my focus wasn’t on a little white ball. No, the thought I just couldn’t shake was this: How long has it been since anything related to Kiss was actually positive? Thankfully, they have been inducted in the Rock N Roll hall of fame, but how awkward has it all been since that brief reunion back in 1995? I want music. Quality music from someone…
  • WLM Reviews: Project Arcadia – A Time of Changes

    31 Aug 2014 | 12:00 am
After a slew of traditional and Power Metal over the last couple of months, it was nice to see some Prog Metal in my inbox in the form of A Time of Changes on Nightmare Records. Project Arcadia challenges both musically and lyrically, providing a needed dose of something different. The most alluring thing about Project Arcadia is the presence of one Urban Breed, a gentleman who has proven himself to be an outstanding singer with previous bands, notably Tad Morose (so underrated) and a brief stint with Pyramaze. Breed’s style is one that I am drawn to – clear enunciation, tending…
  • WLM Reviews: The Haunted – Exit Wounds

With a shot fired from a .50 caliber machine gun, it’s not the entry that does so much damage, but the lead leaving the body.  Similarly The Haunted are back causing massive damage with Exit Wounds on Century Media Records. The Gothenburg quintet sees a return to form after the marginal Unseen album a few years ago.  Here they churn out a bunch of quick blasts of Thrashy Melo-Death, none of the tracks being longer than just over four minutes.   While I am not going to put this one on par with my favorite of theirs, Made Me Do It, it is still The Haunted and they do what they do…

Despite my advanced age, I’m not generally a fan of “geriatric” metal since I believe there are hundreds of amazing bands making great music today for every one “back in the day.” Still there are a couple of acts from that era that I keep close to my heart and one of them includes my old, and I mean OLD, friends in Corrosion of Conformity. They are now touring as a three-piece featuring guitarist Woody Weatherman, bassist/vocalist Mike Dean, and drummer Reed Mullin. Reed, or “Mule” as we call him, sat down with me on a friend’s couch in San…

One of the great disappointments of the last year was the news that immediately after releasing the brilliant The Pineal Chronicles Phase I: Furtherance, Sacramento’s Bispora had split up and the world might never experience Phase II. Happier news after the jump. In case you missed this record which was hidden on my Top 20 List for 2013, Phase I and Bispora took the idea of genre mixing to a whole new blend. The album takes you from Extreme Death Metal to Fusion to what I can only describe as Grunge. There is literally nowhere this record didn’t explore and thus the disappointment…

In order to prevent myself from feeling like an old man, I’ll refrain from the discussion about how videos were sparse back in the day when there was no internet. During my younger years much time was spent watching MTV when they actually played music videos. Not only that, but they had a few shows... While many Autumns Eyes songs are created from an organic process inspired by instinct, there are a few tracks which have a story to tell behind their origin. Parallel Absolution is a favorite amongst fans, but it’s inception is rooted in a unique story. The year was somewhere around 2005 shortly after the release of...
