    8 Jun 2014 | 2:02 am
Thought I'd share this sobering account of what's happened to the landscape for those who create music. This piece, poignantly written by songwriter Van Dyke Parks, explains why many of us may be considering a career change (or at least modification) in the future. The full article: THE DAILY BEAST A few highlights: Last month I was invited up to Ringo Starr’s home in Beverly Hills. He asked me to write a song with him for his next “virtual” album. In two days’ devotion, we conjured and recorded a piece called “Bamboula.” We then sat back and guessed what our possible “day…

What is progressive rock? To some, it is sonic material played by “real” musicians with playing abilities beyond the average listener’s appreciation and too uncompromising to stoop to the level defined by our present culture of mass consumerism and commercialism. To others, it represents pompous, overblown, bombastic musical pontification by dweebs who – when not playing fantasy board games or reading JRR Tolkien - spent too many hours of their youth locked in bedrooms practicing their instruments. The truth can be both, neither and somewhere in between. In other words, progressive…

The instrumental metal/electronic/dance-y/trance-y/industrial quartet show no sign of slowing down which, by default, means I’m not going to be able to slow down in my unwavering support for the band. And if they keep offering up killer albums like their recently released eighth album, Stern , well, that’s just more deaf ears for my fanboy-ism to fall upon. Anaal Nathrakh Desideratum Metal Blade 27 October 2014 by Rob McAuslan How, if you’re Anaal Nathrakh, do you develop your sound even further into the realms of the ridiculously extreme? It’d be fair to say that in their pretty rarefied stratum, Nathrakh are already top dog – black-grind-industrial-death metal isn’t the largest of fields to be playing in, after all – but not content with this status, these Midlands misanthropes attempt to push harder and harder with each release. This time around, the electronics are handled in conjunction with the charmingly-named Gore Tech,…

WE BLOODY LOVE RAGING SPEEDHORN. Now we’ve got that out of the way, let’s be serious for a moment. We’re as indifferent and desensitised to news of yet-another-band-reunion as the next set of jaded metal bloggers, but the news earlier this year that Raging Speedhorn would be reforming to perform select festival dates (and as it later transpired, a tour too) triggered whatever spark of excitement that still manages to survive deep within our black, cynical hearts. This was one of the band that helped define out youth. This was the British band who bloody well took it to the…

This week we’re turning our attention to the new split LP from The Body and Sandworm, and boy, is it a chirpy little number. As it’s nearly Hallowe’en, we were going to rant about the soundtrack for Spawn: The Movie for this week’s Sunday Spotify Slaylist. It’s a rubbish movie adaptation of a painfully 90s-naff comic. It’s about Satan and is stuffed to the tits with bad horror imagery. And it’s got a soundtrack of collaborations featuring artists from across the spectrum of heavy metal and artists you’d never expect them to get together with. It’s infinitely more interesting and entertaining than the movie it accompanies. And it’s not on Spotify. So…

The Acacia Strain – ‘Coma Witch’. Rise Records The Acacia Strain – ‘Coma Witch’ (Rise) Genre: Death Metal/Hardcore Longtime deathcore purveyors The Acacia Strain are back with their seventh full-length release in Coma Witch, a bleak, vitriolic, and pummeling ode to the chug-goddess that witnesses the addition of two new guitarists and the departure of original axe-hacker Daniel ‘DL’ Laskiewicz. The band’s penchant for ominous notes and colossal rhythms remains viciously intact, but The Acacia Strain’s complacency towards the writing process ultimately delivers little more…

  • WLM Reviews: At the Gates – At War With Reality

    Harley
    25 Oct 2014 | 12:00 am
An incredible amount of anticipation has been in the air since At the Gates announced a forthcoming studio album earlier this year. Has the nearly two decade wait been worth it? With a baker’s dozen of songs coming in at around 45 minutes, ATG still clearly has some quality material to add to the Melodic Death Metal scene with their new album At War With Reality from Century Media. They have honed the tracks to include only the essential, avoiding the ever growing tendency to overstay their welcome. It’s great to hear that one of the originators of the style can still create…
  • Revocation’s Deathless- Will it be immortal?

    The Shepherd
    24 Oct 2014 | 12:00 pm
Sleepwalking through the dank corridors of death metal, my monotonous journey was abruptly ended by the jagged edged concrete catacombs that Boston based Revocation is. Death, thrash, tech, jazz, and power metal tossed into a pot of musical gumbo, the 10 course offering is scrumptious and filling. Turned off by the stale taste and humdrum flavor of death metal? That sentiment, shared by many a metal enthusiast, needs to be revisited and retracted, because Revocation’s astounding new album, Deathless (Metal Blade Records), shatters the tired notion that has befallen a genre plagued by…

When a band changes their sound, it is usually to appeal to a wider audience. It brings forth more opportunities for the group and lets them put their hands in as many markets as possible. When Pianos Become The Teeth declared that their new record would have no screaming on it, there was intrigue in regards to whether or not they could still convey the same level of intense emotion they are known for while reaching out to these new audiences and markets. Keep You, an apt title, does indeed keep the emotional intensity, but does so in a different way.
