We’re your friend! We’re not one of them! Want proof? The latest installment in the Decibel Flexi Series is controversial March cover star Leviathan tackling Black Flag’s legendary “My War.” See? As always, we have your best, most demented interests at heart. The one-man U.S. black metal trailblazer known as Leviathan (a.k.a. Jef Whitehead) has struck again, warping the hardcore anthem into music that is singularly his own twisted vision. “My War” was recorded way back in 2002, but sat on the shelf for 13 years before we resurrected it for the Flexi…

    26 Feb 2015 | 5:13 am
We’ve been big fans of Jeff Tuttle ever since we first saw him practically challenge an entire venue for a fight, during The Dillinger Escape Plan’s quite-frankly-infamous two-shows-in-one-day showcase of Option Paralysis at. We were pretty bummed out when he announced his decision to leave one of Thrash Hits’ collectively favourite bands to concentrate on his filmmaking, but at the same time we were super excited about what possibilities that might bring. We caught up with Jeff to talk about his current musical projects – the noise beast that is Old Gods and the…

Yes, this is a MASSIVE fudge. Heavy Wax aren’t a label. They’re a shop. They’re not even a real physical shop. Heavy Wax is an online vinyl-only music shop founded last year, run by Nathan “Barley” “also-runs-Basick-Records” Phillips. We figured it was a good idea to grill the brains of the Basick Bossman as to why he’s gotten into the physical end of the musical business chain, and we’ll be damned if we can’t ham-fistedly fudge this into our ongoing Label Profile series because of it. —- So why start selling vinyl now? Franck is one of my favorite singers of the genre. Sure he is dominating the whole album, but he is doing it in a way that no one will complain, since this guy has one of the most distinctive and gifted vocals in the scene. Following their previous journey the band is playing music that sounds closer to their early 00 era, but in a more modern approach. Once again the vocals are superb, fitting perfectly with the mood of the…

The ratings are on a 5 star scale. Aktor – ‘Paranoia’. High Roller Records Aktor – ‘Paranoia’ (High Roller) Genre: Heavy Metal Chris Black is constantly moving forward, as his work ethic is commendable. After High Sprits and Dawnbringer releases in 2014 he is back with his latest creationAktor. Their debut release Paranoia is rooted in psychedelic tendencies and heavily influenced by ‘70s progressive rock. Aktor are more suited in the rock world and is the least heavy of all of Black’s projects. As always, Black’s melodies are infectious and seep into your consciousness the…

  • WLM Interviews: Fernando Ribeiro of Moonspell

I had the opportunity to speak with Fernando Ribeiro from Portugal’s Moonspell about their new album Extinct, 80s Indie band influences, Type O Negative, and, of course, why he loves metal. Many thanks to Fernando and Jon for setting it up. -Harley
  • WLM Reviews: Moonspell – Extinct

    28 Feb 2015 | 12:00 am
Moonspell is difficult, at best, to classify in a specific Metal genre. Their latest album, Extinct, on Napalm Records is dark, moody, and even commercially accessible at times, making for an interesting listen, occasionally confounding. I’ve not been a fan of Moonspell for a long time, their previous album Alpha Noir being my first true experience with the dark Portugese metallers. I found that album to be an excellent introduction to the band. One of the most compelling aspects about the band is vocalist Fernando Ribeiro’s delivery of both his clean baritone and his…

Those plans to go out just didn’t seem so attractive after a week of hard work and sub-zero temps that apparently will never leave. Or, your like me and just lame. Well, I’ve a partial cure. At 8 p.m. EST on VH1, tune into That Metal Show and savor the only TV show since Adam and Nina (Headbanger’s Ball) that gives a rats rump about heavy music. Last week the trio of hosts sat with legendary Rush vocalist/bassist Geddy Lee (after a brief stint with Def Leppard’s Joe Elliot)…

  • What Heavy Blog Is Really Listening To – 3/1/15

    Scott Murphy

During his time as weekend editor here, one of the consistently most popular features Brian Shields would run was the What We’re Really Listening To column, which would ask either Heavy Blog staff or musicians to share the music they’ve been jamming the most recently. We’ve decided that it was too fun an idea to not continue, so we’re picking up where he left off. It should come as no surprise that we at HBIH are constantly listening to music, and as an effort to recommend as many quality tunes as possible, here is a glimpse into what has been dominating our…

Names are powerful things, we’ve discussed this in the past. It bears repeating though in the light of the album we are now looking at: Steven Wilson‘s name is one of those which shine brightest in the skies of contemporary music. From a solo project through one of the most successful progressive acts of the past two decades, finally back to a solo project, Wilson is one of the most varied creators working today. His last album, The Raven Who Refused To Sing, was an amazingly well-made record but also touched on one of the gripes that many people have with Wilson: his slow drift…

The Chicago powerhouses are set to release their new album, Rust, through Deathwish on March 10th but before that you have to watch their new video for ‘Amongst The Rust’. It is definitely not what I expected before watching. For starters, frontman Hammers McPligue has a shirt on! Unreal, I know. Founding Korn drummer David Silveria is suing his former band, over claims that his 2006 departure from the group was only a hiatus and after attempting to return to the band in 2013, had the door closed on him. Silveria also claims that he still has ownership in the band, and is looking for restitution. According to TMZ, the legal documents reveal that the drummer is upset that Korn had guitarist Brian ‘Head’ Welch return to the fold with open arms, yet did not offer the same to him. At this point, it seems that Silveria is asking a judge to find out how much money the band made since he…
