  • Photos: The Answer @ Brighton Conchorde 2 – 25 March 2015

    26 Mar 2015 | 6:45 am
The Answer are one of those bands we’re just glad exists. Sure, sure, they aren’t exactly breaking any molds with their respectfully-retro brand of heavy rock, but they most definitely do it was a damn sight more panache than 99% of the naff revivalist bands we’ve sat through over the last seven years. They’re currently out on the road to tour their latest album, Raise A Little Hell, and they’ve brought The Picturebooks and Bad Touch along with them. Naturally, our man in Brighton, Mike Burnell was down for the whole shebang to get lots of photos of the whole…

We started this column with the sole intention of getting you, our dear readers, to buy more music, and to buy more good music at that. And there’s no denying that London-based label Holy Roar Records has been responsible for an absolute shitload of good music over the last nearly-nine years or so. So now that the label has launched a pair of subscription clubs to help you get more of their music quicker, easier, and cheaper…well, we’d be fools not to feature it in this column, wouldn’t we? Yes, that is clubs, as in the plural. Holy Roar have two levels of entry,…

Their instruments kept breaking, the room was full of smoke, and we had so many ciders we were nearly sick on the nightbus afterwards. Waking up the next day, we had a terrible headache but we willingly bombarded it with the powerful, unrelenting marriage of doom, drone, and naked power that was every Ghold track we could glean off the internet. Given that Doom Metal (or should that be DOOM METAL ? It feels like it has earned the right to be in ALL-CAPS) has pretty much more right than any other subgenre to claim it is the “original” form of heavy metal, it seemed kind of remiss that we didn’t have a column dedicated specifically to it. KTHEAT has a bit more muscle and grit than past FACT albums, but they’ve not lost their melodic sensibilities that they manage to float alongside their beefier riffs. It makes quite a change from so…

    Martell
    1 Apr 2015 | 12:00 am
Congratulations to reader Hiram for winning passes for himself and a guest to Meshuggah in Anaheim at The House of Blues on April 13th. His brutal pit story is a true testament to coming up through the metal ranks. Hiram’s Pit Story: Well I’ve been in many pits, a lot of the ones being rather fun. I gotta say, the craziest one ended up being my first time in a mosh pit, A local festival that happens in Long Beach Every Year called Ink-N-Iron. I really wasn’t into more “underground” metal yet, so I was rather unknown to the headliners Suicidal Tendencies. There…

Last week we took a look at the “old school” metal stuff I missed and the response was staggering, with people suggesting things they missed and also things they love about the more modern metal we absorb today. So, today I’m moving on from the past and sharing what I love about the modern metal means of todays world. 10: Wireless Instruments – the modern technology has allowed bands to unplug and own the stage like never before. If you head to a show in this day and age and see guitarists that are tied to a wire you will quickly realize how much it limits their…

If your lyrical content is good enough, you shouldn’t have to hide behind unintelligible screeches. 2. Song titles need to be in a…

Italy’s premier sludge metal band, Ufomammut, have been one of the most prolific artists in the genre ever since they first came onto the scene in 1999. It’s hard to imagine that the band is actually about to release their ninth full-length album, yet here we are already. Following up their ambitious 2012 double album, Oro: Opus Primum and Oro: Opus Alter, band members Urlo, Vita and Poia have returned with a modest six-song, 46 minute outing that pummels just as much as it soars through the cosmos.
