What is progressive rock? To some, it is sonic material played by “real” musicians with playing abilities beyond the average listener’s appreciation and too uncompromising to stoop to the level defined by our present culture of mass consumerism and commercialism. To others, it represents pompous, overblown, bombastic musical pontification by dweebs who – when not playing fantasy board games or reading JRR Tolkien - spent too many hours of their youth locked in bedrooms practicing their instruments. The truth can be both, neither and somewhere in between. In other words, progressive…

We’re still recovering from a long, drunken, ripping Sunday night in Silver Spring, MD, the last (slam) dance of the third annual Decibel Magazine Tour. Regional openers Coke Bust got their moniker hilariously plastered on the Fillmore’s marquee; Noisem, Gorguts and the Black Dahlia Murder were in full take-no-prisoners mode; and Carcass blasted through over 25 years of classics in an unforgettable 90-minute finale. The last date was certainly one to remember — 75% of the dB staff was in attendance, trying to avoid the creep trudging around in the “Fuck Muslims”…

I’m very excited to be returning to Music Masters Camp, home of the Skolnick & Broderick Winter Guitar Retreat in 2011. Though I’d greatly looked forward to another retreat with my friend Chris Broderick, thanks to recent East Coast winters being impractical as well as these bands of ours that tend to get busy the rest of the year, things just haven't worked out scheduling-wise. Alas, Guitar Intensive Workshop here! My first post of 2014 appears courtesy of The Talkhouse, a unique online music journal, described as "Smart, distinguished musicians from all genres and generations writing about the latest releases." It's humbling to be among such distinguished and diverse company as techno-vegan Moby, trailblazing jazz pianist (and Harvard Genius Grant recipient) Vijay Iyer, Slipknot screamer Corey Taylor (whose artistry extends far beyond his image) and numerous others. Curiously, my two favorite pieces on The Talkhouse are about hip-hip releases, as reviewed by artists who are among the last anyone would…

Ned Vizzini was my upstairs neighbor. When I'd first moved in, our interactions were limited to very quick "hellos" while coming and going on the stairs - typical of Brooklyn apartment dwellers. After all, New York is a place packed with creative workaholics focused on whatever we're doing next (many of us, myself included, wouldn't have it any other way). That's not to say that you can't get to know someone, it just takes a bit longer. This is especially true when one neighbor makes frequent trips to LA to write for television (him) and the other is a guitarist who tours the world much of…

I recently had the privilege to watch an advance of a film entitled The Wrecking Crew - an inspiring documentary that, unless you're already familiar with this story, bears no resemblance to anything the title could possibly bring to mind. For some, that might be a fictional team of Marvel Comics supervillains; for others, a 1968 comedic film staring Dean Martin; and for others still, a signature song by East Coast thrash metal band, Overkill. No, this is a film about an unsung group of top Los Angeles studio musicians, a real life A-Team of the 60s, 70s and 80s. It has nothing to do with…

Back in 2010, Scion ran the “No Label Needed” contest in which the car company enabled a band to “receive insight and instruction on the music industry from music industry professionals while recording an EP at the Machine Shop” (you can read more about it here). Minnesota’s Iron Thrones came away winners and proceeded to put out The Wretched Sun later that year, which we covered in our November 2010 issue. He is the brains behind the great black metal band Krieg and also survived years as a member of Twilight. I don’t issue perfect scores to new albums very often. As Craig Hayes so eloquently wrote a couple weeks ago, positivity and over-praise is a plague in metal criticism, so much so that some publications so constantly hover in the 7 to 10-out-of-10 that a 6 is a negative rating. Ratings, to be honest, are so arbitrary, and I’ll actually let you in on a little secret of mine: whenever I have to issue a rating for Decibel magazine or any other outlet I write for, I always deduct one point from what I instinctively think it should be, because in the long run that’s eventually how I’ll…

As fun as it is to cover everything Carcass and At the Gates are up to, occasionally it’s nice to shine a light on a truly underground band. Dallas’s Bludded Head definitely fall into that category, scooping out unpleasant sludge with a tendency towards the minimalist. Their misery comes from a real place, too – singer/guitarist Nevada Hill has been battling cancer and the ravages of chemotherapy. You can read about his struggles with both the disease and the American healthcare system here. Produced by Daron Beck  of Pinkish Black, their second album, Bludded Death, comes…

Metsatöll Karjajuht Spinefarm Records 07 March 2014 by Pete Long When people talk about folk metal, they are often talking about metal with a bit of a rustic tinge. The odd flute trill, maybe a violin, some jaunty riffs on the electric guitars – very much more metal than folk. Bands who are as much folk as metal, where the traditional instruments and melodies play as big a role as the crushing riffs – more Pogues than Dropkicks, to borrow a punk comparison – they’re a rarer beast. Metsatöll have been firmly towards the Pogues-end of that spectrum ever since multi-instrumentalist…

LostAlone Shapes Of Screams Graphite Records 07 April 2014 by Gavin Lloyd It’s no secret that Derby three piece LostAlone have had lofty ambitions far greater than their relatively humble current status. Despite garnering plenty of praise over the past few years and notable fans such as My Chemical Romance’s Frank Iero singing their praises, this adulation hasn’t crossed over to a larger audience, but it hasn’t stopped the band setting their sights on breaking out of the UK toilet circuit. As one of the founders of doom-drone experimentalists Sunn O))), he pushes the boundaries of what constitutes music. With his solo stuff, well, let’s just say he drives through those boundaries with the care and consideration of Dick Dastardly trying to win the Wacky Races, only with “insane noises made with a guitar while remaining stoic and in the shadows” instead of “wild scheme to crash everyone else’s car” as his Unique Selling…

Well, it’s 2014 and the 8 year anniversary of this website has come and gone. • BRAINSTORM - Firesoul

    10 Apr 2014 | 2:07 pm
Brainstorm strike back with their latest opus, their tenth so far, and an album that will please all their fans. First of all let me admit that the vocals of Andy B. Franck is one of my favorite singers of the genre. Sure he is dominating the whole album, but he is doing it in a way that no one will complain, since this guy has one of the most distinctive and gifted vocals in the scene. Following their previous journey the band is playing music that sounds closer to their early 00 era, but in a more modern approach. Once again the vocals are superb, fitting perfectly with the mood of the…
  • MAYAN - Antagonize

    2 Apr 2014 | 2:08 pm
Having creating some havoc with their debut release back in 2011, the Dutch Death Metal crew is back with an album that will try to raise the standards of their music to a new level. The band continues the same high quality mixture of Death Metal and Symphonic Power Metal orchestrations, with some improvements and additions. First of all, the music is moving on the same top class level, complex and intriguing, constantly changing forms and shapes, but always interesting and groovy. Songs are well written, and have no less good moments, and although sharing some common elements, each one has…
  • SHRAPNEL - The Virus Conspires

    28 Mar 2014 | 2:30 pm
Shrapnel is a band that comes from UK, and made it's presence back in 2009 with the release of an EP and this is their first full length album so far. Right from the first note, the band shows it's intentions, which are no other that playing Thrash the way it was introduced back in the 80's. Blending all the good elements from both US and European scene, the band presents an album that is an absolute must have for every fan of the genre. The album starts with a blast and leaves no room for breathing till the end, providing an endless assault of intelligent riff works combined with some super…
  • SPELLBLAST - Nineteen

    16 Mar 2014 | 7:00 am
This album was a stream of fresh air coming out from our speakersPower Symphonic Metal from Italy ...mature, technical and catchy compositions and influences unprecedented for the genre: Spaghetti Western touches reminiscent of Ennio Morricone and Luis Bacalov color the whole thing with originality.  Without musical chatter and mostly without fillers, full of pleasant surprises and twists "Nineteen" is an album that will keep your interest from the first to the last second.Rating: 5/5

A pretty common thing that most artists due when they disband or when they see their current projects are not going where they want it to, definitely more than half the time we see their name in another venture and project, or better yet, they go solo. Today’s artist, Anette Olzon, immediately describes that phrase. From Finland, her name is utmost familiar to those who are distinct fans of Nightwish, and other bands she has associated with include, The Rasmus, Swallow The Sun,and the band her husband is bassist for, PainHer career is currently on its 25th year and with the recent…

    16 Apr 2014 | 12:00 pm
2012 saw the return of Steven Adler of Guns & Roses fame. The album “Back From the Dead” was hard hitting sleaze metal just like we expected and I enjoyed it from cover to cover. Unfortunately as things appeared to be back on track for Steven the rug was pulled out again and he entered rehab in May of 2013. We haven’t heard much from the band since, so I thought it was so fitting to give you the song “Own Worst Enemy” this week. I think it describes a guy we all want to succeed to a tee! Enjoy and pick up the album, it’s a nice piece of work! Martell

I hadn’t heard of Bloodshot Dawn until just a few weeks ago, which was a grave, grave mistake. I am now obsessed with these guys and their amazing take on melodic death/ thrash metal. Our very own Noyan gave their debut album a perfect score, and even went as far as saying, “If anyone can bring melodeath back, these guys have a good chance of doing so. In essence, Bloodshot Dawn are the heroes that Gothenburg needs.” I couldn’t agree more with Noyan’s sentiments, and the band has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the recording of their highly…

Either by some sort of mistake or act of ballsiness, someone at 98.9 The Rock has leaked a track off of the hotly anticipated new Mastodon album Once More Round the Sun. The song is called ‘High Road,’ and after only one listen I’m already digging it more than the bulk of tracks off of The Hunter. Comments from the band about returning to a “vintage” Mastodon sound are ringing true here. Listen to it right now below before it inevitably gets yanked. There is autoplay, so be warned. Thoughts? There are many approaches to the darker sides of the human psyche. Some would rather focus on rage or hatred, spewing forth a torrent of caustic vitriol. Others sink deep into the far reaches of human sadness, exploring ponderous and overbearing depressions and melancholy. Rarely can a band do both, as each segment requires different vocabularies and outlooks on life. However, in those rare cases, anger and depression mix together, creating a potent and heady elixir that is truly disturbing on a deep level. Both acts featured on this EP have spawned  numerous ventures into this…
