  • What We Want from the New Slayer Album

    20 Jul 2015 | 5:25 pm
When our favorite bands release new albums we are excited and eager to see what they will do. But there are a few things that every fan expects to hear in the new album. As Slayer gets ready to release their eleventh studio album 'Repentless' there are a few things that I want to see in their 2015 release. Thrash Metal 101 As one of the founder fathers, when we get a Slayer album we are excepting a raw thrash metal sound. We expect nothing else, or nothing more. We don't want any cross over or experiments.  Just thrash metal basic...fast riffs, double bass, and aggression.

People should be concerned about the underlining positives compared that Tidal brings to the market unlike the likes of SoundCloud and other existing music apps. With Tidal doubling Spotify’s average payout, the rapper’s music service appears to be rewarding larger royalties to the artists extending streaming rights to Tidal, which could be beneficial to the metal community if they get behind this app in the coming months. read more

Australia has been home to many spectacular music acts for decades, and there are no signs of that title being stripped any time soon. Bands such as Cog, Dead Letter Circus, and even the almighty Karnivool all call the Land Down Under home. The scene seems relatively condensed in the sense that the majority of Aussie bands that come out of the woodwork do so in unique fashion, each having their own signature spin on a certain sound and a way to set themselves apart. We Lost The Sea is another one of these bands, but their claim to fame is very different. The tragic suicide of frontman Chris…

Welcome back once again to Starter Kit, Heavy Blog’s weekly exploration of different subgenres rounded out with three releases that serve as good starting points for further listening. We’ve got several of these subgenres in the bag so far, the latest one being Simon’s excellent take on OG Progressive Deathcore, but today’s is rather exceptional in its musical wizardry. Neo-classical tech death is an admittedly rather small offshoot of technical death metal as a whole; while tech death is already all about complexity, experimentation, and somewhat progressive elements…

Upon hearing “Finisterra”, the first thing one notices is…

Following the release of the 2013 sophomore album Sunbather, California black metal/shoegaze/”blackaze” outfit Deafheaven have locked themselves away in the studio since the end of 2014 (with the exception of playing a few shows and festivals here and there), but yesterday, July 27th, the band uploaded a minute long teaser of the new album, which is (supposedly) titled New Bermuda and will be released in October through Anti- Records. Now, the reason the word “supposedly” is in parentheses when the name of the album was mentioned is because we are not sure if that is…

Split releases are a common theme in today’s metal underground. It’s a great way for relatively unknown bands with similar sounds to get noticed by putting out splits with friends, and they generally go one of two ways: both parts of the split are great, or one band has a much stronger side than the other. Splits are generally good, because chances are if you pick one up, you like at least one of the bands on it. This review is about a solid sludge / doom / black metal release by Nachterror and Altars Of Grief, and we’re going to split both sides into two small reviews, so let’s…

Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe took to his Instagram account to post his disagreement with comments made by Mayhem Festival founder Kevin Lyman about the metal scene. During a recent interview, Lyman argued that he and his fellow Mayhem organizers were having trouble booking the festival and selling tickets because the metal genre was becoming “gray, bald and fat.” Those comments led to an onslaught of backlash from people such as Slayer’s Kerry King who blamed the poor Mayhem ticket sales on bad booking choices. Lyman has since apologized for his remarks, however the Lamb of God frontman…
