The most recent players of this deadly game of brinkmanship are Cancer Bats and While She Sleeps. We sent Josh Grahamalong to the Glasgow leg of the tour toscope out which band came out on top. 6 things we learnt while watching Cancer Bats and While She Sleeps in Glasgow: 1) Belgian blackened hardcore outfit Oathbreaker are greeted politely by a half-filled ABC, and that’s about as good as it…

It features the band playing ‘Deyðir varðar’ from their 2013 debut Evst as the sky goes dark and the source of all life and joy disappears. If that isn’t the appropriate backdrop for some doom metal, then I don’t know what is and Hamferð do justice to the occasion with…

We have waited six, long, hard years for a new full length album from The Armed. They are, in our humble opinion, one of the best damn messed-up math/punk/stupid genre-tag-du-jour-core bands in the world today. Who’s been looking forward to this one? I have! Since 2013’s Straight Out of Hell – a fine continuation of a great legacy – I was confident Helloween could maintain the consistency that brought them success. Here on My God Given Right, the Teutonic Metalheads prove they’ve still got “it”. I admittedly haven’t spent as much time with this album as it probably deserves, with real life getting in the way and all. I also admit that based on the first single released from the album was good, but it didn’t really make me sit up and notice. For…
  • WLM Concert Review: Ensiferum and Korpiklaani at Bottom Lounge, Chicago

    23 May 2015 | 12:00 am
With a packed house and one of the craziest crowds I’ve seen in a long time, Finland’s two Folk Metal powerhouses invaded Bottom Lounge in Chicago and completely destroyed all in sight. I arrived just at the end of Trollfest‘s set.  I saw them a couple of years ago, but don’t really feel like I missed much.  When I walked in, though, the Bottom Lounge was nearly full and quite a bit warmer than the coolness falling on Chicago.  Tonight the supporting band of the alternating headliners was Nuclear Blast artist Korpiklaani.  This was my third time seeing them in the…
  • WLM Concert Review: Amaranthe with I, Prevail and Santa Cruz @ Mojoes

    22 May 2015 | 12:00 pm
Amaranthe’s latest album, Massive Addictive was released last year and in support of the album, the group made round two through the states, only this time they were headlining, boy what a treat! The group brought two smaller acts to support them through the tour which included Finnish Hard Rock/Glam Metal band and labelmates, Santa Cruz as well as Detroit Post-Hardcore band, I, Prevail. The killer show took place at Mojoes in Joliet earlier this week on May 20th. Arriving early, I locked my place to get front and center. Unfortunately the temps were in the lower 50’s and it…

  • Steve Von Till – A Life Unto Itself

Verbs are very useful when describing albums. Adjectives tend to slip faster into hyperbole and there’s something about the dynamics of doing that relates to music very well. So, when one turns to an album, it might serve to consider now what the album sounds like but what actions it calls to mind. With Steve Von Till‘s A Life Unto Itself, the semantic field is clear: scraping, digging, distilling, excavating. Reaching into some sort of core that has always been present in von Till’s illustrious career and bringing it to light. If you seek the lofty caverns and…

It seems easy when listening to new music to focus one’s attention entirely on the instrumental aspect of it and how the musicians are actually performing. Yet this mental trap more often than not puts the vocals in the background. Of course when one is mostly concerned with the albums coming out of the murky underbelly of brutal and extreme metal, where the majority of vocals don’t really do much to set themselves apart, it’s almost second nature to disregard the vocals. But when attempting to digest something that can barely be even considered metal like the works of…

I need to start this off by saying something personal. I feel so, so blessed that I am one of those whom work for Heavy Blog and have the ability to bring so much information, especially new music, to the readers of our site. And today, courtesy of three-man progressive death metal/deathcore band Slice The Cake, I have the pleasure of bringing you yet another new piece of music. This one is a doozy, too. Check it out. Wow. Honestly, it’s hard to find the right words for how much I dig this band, but I gotta try: Slice The Cake has always dumbfounded me with their brilliant combination…

We’ve been a bit silent perhaps about Caligula’s Horse but that’s only because there hasn’t been much to report. Needless to say, we are all eagerly awaiting whatever comes next for this great band, since their 2013 release was one of the best albums of that year. I, for one, am totally in love with it. After we showed you some photos of the band supporting Opeth, there has now surfaced a live video from that performance. Not only that, but it’s for “Into the White”, undoubtedly one of the best songs on the album. Head on over the jump to check it…

Australian progressive/extreme/violin (?) metal heroes Ne Obliviscaris have finally made good on the promise of last year’s successful crowdfunding campaign, having announced their first ever world tour in support of sophomore record Citadel. Tour dates and more after the jump! In the past, one would have to reside in Ne Obliviscaris’ native Australia for a realistic chance to actually see the six-piece work their magic in a live setting. Last year, however, the band decided to go the crowdfunding route in order to potentially expand their touring plans – having reached…

    20 May 2015 | 5:13 pm
In a recent interview with Spooky Empire, Phil Anselmo spoke about a number of projects he has coming up in the near future. It was recently revealed that the singer’s ‘Housecore Horror Fest’ will return in November. This is good news to festival goers as it seemed the event wouldn’t return after the death of co-founder Corey Mitchell last year. However, Anselmo says: “Corey was a passionate, unbelievably hard working man — a very, very, very, very, very good friend … This year, we’re dedicating the whole thing to Corey. Rest in peace.” The festival’s…

According to Dickinson: “I would like to thank the fantastic medical team who have been treating me for the last few months, resulting in this amazing outcome. “It’s been tough on my family, and in many ways, it was harder for them than me. “I’d also like to send a heartfelt thanks to all…

Deftones frontman Chino Moreno recently spoke to U.K.’s Kerrang! magazine about the status of the band’s latest album. According to Chino, he says: “When we make records, we never really go in with an idea of what we’re trying to do, or what kind of record we’re trying to make. We want to go on the vibe that’s created by us being in the same room. All in all, it’s the five of us doing what we do, so it’s definitely a Deftones record. But with this one, I feel like it’s a little more technical, maybe. We’re constantly trying to see…
